Shamefully Kick Starting

Last year was a bust for me. I read a total of 34 books, barely scraping half way through my goal of 65. I don’t know what happened, well I do. I got distracted. I started Univeristy again, I moved house, I worked a solid 38 hours a week pretty much every week, there were family dramas and a holiday that put me into relax mode, I got swept away in it all.

Looking back I failed at everything in this blog, like everything. Every challenge, every readathon, every TBR pile. Nothing was updated cause nothing got finshed.

I am not going to try and convince myself that I am starting fresh and list off the 30 books I will read this year. I obviously don’t work that way and neither will my blog. So for now I will go for the flow. Ive set my book goal as 50 which is reachable and unstressful, and I will write what I want to write. They are rules without being ‘rules’. Hell, I might even throw some books to charity.

Lets see how long I will keep this up.

#ReadThemAllThon TBR Pile

I wanna be the very best
Like no one ever was
To catch them is my real test
To train them is my cause

I will travel across the land
Searching far and wide
Each Pokemon to understand
The power that’s inside

I am sorry for getting that stuck in your head…..

I have been playing so much Pokemon Go  recently it getting to be an addiction. I am currently level 19, not 100% on my top six, I am halfway to being happy but I digress.

The wonderful lady at ReadatMidnight is hosting the #ReadThemAllThon and even though I have sucked at readathons in the past I am determined to stick with this one! Its Pokemon related!

The ReadAThon runs from Sunday 14th September to Sunday 4th August.

Btw all of the graphics are hers, I still have zero idea how to use photoshop! Also if you have any tip and tricks or know of any tutorials on photoshop please let me know I am a total beginner and I need some serious help!

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness. This is the first book of the Chaos Walking trilogy, since I adored A Monster Calls by Ness I am hoping to love this as well.

512 pages, possible 51cp

I have very few books at will make me cry, they just aren’t my type of novel to read per say. I do have Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz. It is a contemporary which I am not 100% in love with but it has been on my shelf forever.

357 pages, possible 35cp

I am generally one to jump off the hype train as it has led me on horrible book adventures. But there is one book series that I haven’t started but everyone seems to adore Cinder by Marissa Meyer. I know don’t shoot.

390 pages, possible 39cp

I have very few books unread that feature diversity. I know its a sham! I do choose Boy Meets Boy by David Leviathan. It is a shorter book but its pretty much the only one!

185 pages, possible 18cp

This was another difficult one for me as I have no epic romances in my unread bookshelf but I do have A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray and its set in the 1800’s so heres hoping there is a romance somewhere in there!

403 pages, possible 40cp

Does fantasy count as supernatural? Lets say it does! Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb. I got this for christmas and I know its a start to a massive series so thats fun!

392 pages, possible 39cp

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Mass. Its a red book cover thats for sure. I am dying to pick this one up so hopefully I will get around to it when the ReadAThon starts!

416 pages, possible 41cp

For this one I chose Red Rising by Pierce Brown, I have no idea if it is post-apocalyptic. I mean its in space and it has class/race theme so I am assuming it will be post-apocalyptic!

382 pages, possible 38cp

So there you have it my 8 books that I will hopefully be reading in this ReadAThon. Sweet thanks to Aentee over at ReadatMidnght for hosting this. Go check her out and join her this is ReadAThon!

Also my Pokemon of choice is Oddish, I attempted to make a trainer card but like I said my photoshop skills are horrendous! Tips and tricks welcome below!

Until next time I read a book

Review: A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

As they do. But this isn’t the monster Conner’s been expecting, the one from the nightmare he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments., the one with the darkness and the screaming. . . .

This monster is something different, something ancient, something wild. And it wants the truth.

This is the first piece of work I have read by Patrick Ness and I am so glad it was. His writing is simple but so impactful.

Conner a 13 year old boy trying to make sense of his mother’s terminal illness, the nightmare, his hastily grandmother, the father who was never really a father and the yew tree that visits him at exactly 12:07 trying to uncover the lies he is telling himself.

From the first sentence of this novel I was so entranced in the story. The writing, characters and the artwork all flow together beautifully. I read this book in under 2 hours, it grabs you and refuses to let you go until it breaks your heart.

I found the writing so clever, written from a child perspective so Ness used that to leave out information that a child’s mind would gloss over but you know whats happening you just don’t know everything.

I didn’t think the story would play out the way it did. I honestly didn’t know anything about the story but it was completely different from any other horror or suspenseful story I have read. It was realistic. What was happening could happen to anyone and the way he reacted the other children reacted to him was all realistic which made the story even better.

The artwork was one of my favourite aspects. It wouldn’t of been the same story without it. `After a quick google I found out why the artwork was so familiar! Jim  Kay is the wonderful artist who is currently working on the Illustrated editions of Harry Potter! The minimal colour palette and the use of the negative space is just beautiful.

This is the book you read in the dark, on your own with no distractions in one sitting as you prepare to have your heart ripped out.

I gave this 5/5 stars.

Until the next time I read a book

Beauty Fridays: Night Time Skin Care Regime

Last week I did my Morning Skin Care Regime, this week its my night time turn.

Mario Badescu – Enzyme Cleansing Gel

I spoke about this one last week. It is pretty much a chemical exfoliant that can also do an amazing job at removing all your makeup. I am really enjoying this one. My skin has been improving so much and I cant fault it as of yet!

Garnier – Eiceller Cleansing water

As like the last product I did talk about this one as well last week. I use this just to make sure that all my makeup is gone off my face. It also just helps to sooth and clam my skin.

Dr. Lewinn’s – Skin Renewal Overnight Exfoliator

2-3 times a week I will whip out this bad boy and pop it on top skin. It is another chemical exfoliator and so far I like it, I don’t see any major improvements but it doesn’t break me out and smells nice so I will continue to use it.

Estee Lauder – Advanced Night Repair Eye

This is a tiny tub (5ml) of very expensive eye cream. I don’t recall where I got this but it works wonders. My dark circles are fading and less puffy. Plus you only need the smallest amount so it won’t disappear in a flash.

Origins – Drink up intensive Overnight Mask

Can I just say I love the scent of this, I want to wrap myself up in it. Pretty much I lather my face up in this and in the morning my face is silky smooth. I know this is supposed to be a mask but everyone I know who uses it, uses it as a night cream. Its magic.

Mario Badescu – Drying Lotion

Lastly I will put this magic potion on to any blemishes I have on my face. Then when I wake up in the morning, boom 9 time out of 10 they have shrunk into tiny, manageable spots. I never new how good I could of had it!

That it! I do a little more at night then in the morning. Its just a good time to sort out your face and let it soak up all the moisture.

Do you have any products that you swear by? Or do you love any of the things I mentioned today? Let me know in the comments below!

Until next Friday

June Playlist

Heres something I haven’t done in a little while!

Spotify does this wonderful thing where they create playlists for you based on the music you listen to! Free was one of those songs that was suggested to me on I think the Friday mix. I love the heavy beat and her voice is beautiful.

I haven’t listened to Adele’s entire album as of yet but I am dying to, the singles she has brought out have all been so emotional!

Christina and the Queens is a semi new one for me. I saw her a Tv show singing Tilted and I fell in love. She is a French artist who has created this beautiful pieces of art that just calms me down. Plus sometimes she sings in french!

Cake By The Ocean is my current jam just to dance around and be an idiot!

One Dance & Childs Play are my two favourite songs from Drake’s new album ‘Views’, especially Childs Play it is definitely a mixture of pop and R&B which I can never get enough of.

What have been your favourite songs of June?

Beauty Fridays: Every Day Makeup Routine

I have a pretty standard day to day makeup routine, you know the days where you are working 8 hour days or doing your food shop for the week. One thing I do love is the simple aspect of this look, not too heavy or too light and some simple changes like opting in for a bright lipstick or some eyeshadow can change the  entire look in an instant.

Note: Not all the products I use are in this photo!

The first thing I do is prep my face. I use the Garnier Micellar Water and the 2n1 Eye Makeup Remover to get anything off that I might of missed last night. To moisturise I just use the Olay Cream for Sensitive Kkin. Next I use the Mecca Cosmetica Complextion Perfection primer, the green solution helps tone down the redness in my face.

For foundation I have a few options between the Rimmel BB Cream and the Nars Sheer Glow, I am currently running low on the Sheer Glow so I am mostly using the Revlon Colour Stay Whipped Foundation. Since I have run out of my Mac Mineralize skinfinish, I am using Maybelline’s Super Stay 24 Matte Powder.

For Bronzing I use the Stila Stay All Day Bronzer, Currently loving it. I switch between my two Nars blushes. I have the Nars Classic: Orgasm, which is falling apart and I have the Dual Intensity in Fervor. My favourite out of the two being the darker more coppery shade. My current highlighter while I am searching for a new one is The Body Shop; Blushing Daisies. It is a very shimmery light pink and it works perfectly.

After Curling my lashes I will use my trusted Perversion Mascara by Urban Decay, and for my brows I will use Bobbi Brown’s Brow Kit.  To finalise I will use the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray.

As you can see I don’t use eyeshadows or an eyeliner just because my eyes scare me and I am so bad at doing them. I need to figure out the tricks!

Until Next Friday!

Book Buying Ban: Update

Over the past five to six weeks I have been on a book buying ban. The Main reason being that I spend too much money on books, money that needs to go on more important and adult life things. However boring that may seem I did save some money which is pretty great!

I had three rules going into this ban.

  1. I had two books I wanted to buy, Outlander and A Long Way To A Small Angry Planet. Both of which I did not buy because I couldn’t find the right covers.
  2. I was still able to buy graphic novels. Which I did for the most part.
  3. I can buy books I have already read but don’t own on my shelf.

So I adhered to these rules very well. I didn’t buy a single book and it wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be. I haven’t entered a book store in a long time and I avoided the book sections in department stores.

Everything went surprisingly well and according to plan!

Except for one fact, I haven’t read anything in the past month and before that I read maybe 2 books. My main reason to do this was also to get some major reading done and to get my TBR back to a smaller pile. It hasn’t shifted. Ive tried everything to get out of my book slump, I followed all of the suggestions!

My ban was successful in some cases but in others I feel like I have failed. I will the lift the ban for now, I can go and buy any book my heart desires, any suggestions? I have been out of the loop for a while.

Until the next time I read a book
