BI-MONTHLY WRAP UP

So its been a few weeks since I last posted on here, its been a little haphazard recently.

I really wanted to do a February Favourites post, but currently everything is in boxes because I’m in the middle of moving. Side note: Moving really isn’t fun! wouldn’t really recommend it really. Its the worst packing up all your things knowing in a year you will be moving again. But saying that my books are not going to be sitting in boxes for a year!

So instead of the favourites post I am going to do a wrap up for the first two months of the year!

1. Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic by  Meghan Ciana Doidge.

This was the first book I read of the entire year. Now it wasn’t bad, but I wasn’t good. The only reason I read this book was because it was a free ebook and I needed something to read on my breaks at work. I liked some key elements of the story, the trinkets and the cupcakes were new and interesting. But the whole story was very predictable, I mean 5 chapters in and I already knew what the ending was going to be. I am not a huge fan of paranormal fantasy, because it was all vampires and werewolves which we all know has been over done. It did get me back into the groove when at the end of last year I did fall off the bandwagon.

I gave this a 2.5/5

2. The Opposite of Loneliness: Essays and Stories by Marina Keegan.

This book was an emotional mess for me. I have done a full review here! The book is written by a dead Yale graduate who will never know that she is a published author. Wow dramatic much! The stories and essays in this book were perfect for me to read. I loved it.

3. Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas 

Let me tell you how good it was getting back into this world was! Very bloody good! To be fair I only had about 70 pages left of this book! But hey, still counts! I can’t talk about it but spoilers but I will say I cried and was an emotional mess afterwards, hell I still am!

4. The Assassin’s Blade by Sarah J. Maas. 

Talking about diving head first back into this world. I really felt the need to read these short stories before I read the first book. No idea why but I needed to read about Sam and feel every sad emotion I could. I can’t talk anymore about this cause spoilers!

5. George by Alex Gino.

I think I have talked about this book so much recently but alas I have not gotten around to writing a review yet! I defiantly need to, as this book follows a Transgender 10 year old girl who is trying to figure everything out in her life surrounding school plays, bullies and how to tell her mum. I don’t care if it is middle grade, this book is for everyone!

6. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare.

Here is a book that I thought I would ever read! After watching the movie a few years ago which was horrible to watch, and the fact that one of my friends was reading this and hated it, plus its urban fantasy which I don’t like, I am shocked I have read this. My reasoning? I started watching the TV which isn’t perfect by any stretch, but it is enjoyable enough for me to continue it every week. So I decided I would try and find an ebook or an online copy of this book to read as a joke. Turns out, even though I despise the main characters I finished this book and it wasn’t the worst thing I have ever read. the world building is very well done and the side character really interest me.

7. City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare. 

Yep, I read this second one. It was also free so why not. This book was an improvement from the first book. the dialogue is still slightly cringe worthy but better than before, the world is getting bigger and more interesting. I don’t hate the fact that there are vampires and werewolves which I am not a fan of reading, but I can get past this one! Again, not a fan of Clary or Jace. They don’t interest me at all, I have read the exact same character before. I am so interested by Alec, Magnus and Isabelle. Simon is annoying in this book.

8. Room by Emma Donoghue. 

This book destroyed me. I felt so much during the reading of this book. The way it was written was so different, told from the perspective from a 5 year old boy who has been sheltered from the world. This books isn’t told in chapters but paragraphs. Its not a stream of consciousness but the flow works so well. I barely noticed that I wasn’t reading in chapters. I adored this book, the plot was so believable that I felt I could just google this and it would of been real. I highly recommend this book.

9. Grace & Style: The Art of Pretending You Have It by Grace Helbig. 

I loved Grace’s last book, I found it to be funny and inspiring and it was filled with amazing and slightly ridiculous advice. Some of which I follow to this day. This book might of fell a little bit short for me. There were parts I skipped and others the I found slightly tedious to get through because it wasn’t my cup of tea. I wasn’t expecting a serious style guide and I loved some parts, like I needed a flow chart to help me throw stuff away and camel toes can be a real issue. It was a mixed bag for me, some hit while others where a miss!

So those are all the books I have read in the past two months! I am one book behind on my 65 book challenge but I am stressing about that, I am just enjoying reading the books I want to read.
